Taxes are the price we pay for living in a democracy.

I, like everyone else, am opposed to indiscriminate taxation. Very few of us skip merrily to the post office to pay our income taxes. I don’t want a carbon tax, or a cow tax, a cap and trade tax, or a death tax. Many taxes that we pay are arbitrary and capricious. In this troubled economic climate, people should be allowed, even encouraged, to keep a larger portion of their honest wages. However, I also believe that signing a “no tax hike” agreement is a bit irresponsible. Our country, our way of life relies on public services. I want quality public schools, public libraries, public parks. I want safe public roads and highways and public transportation. I want police and fire protection, and our nation to maintain a strong defensive posture. Threats by extremist factions, rogue nations with nuclear capabilities, a biological threat of pandemic proportions could dramatically change the landscape of our security. The status quo could change very quickly.

I want to go to Washington to represent the people and the future of Kansas. I can’t make promises today that may negatively impact my constituents at a later date. No one can predict the future. I would consider it dishonest to sign the pledge at this time, not knowing what may lie ahead.

I am opposed to any new taxes or tax increases. In light of today’s economic downturn, raising taxes would be irresponsible. However, there may come a time that the people of the Big First decide that there are additional or enhanced services that we want or need. We can’t have our cake and eat it, too.

The only pledge that I will sign is the pledge to represent my constituents, to always stay responsive to their needs, and to be accessible to the citizens of the Kansas Big First.
