I am convinced that God smiles on Abilene, Ks – or, according to our granddaughter Aubrey, He was smiling on her – in Abilene.
We enjoyed another beautiful day for a parade. We were in Abilene for the D-Day anniversary celebration on June 6 and reveled in the bright sunshine and the beautiful tree-lined streets. Well it all happened again today, as we embraced the Central Kansas Free Fair. The parade route was switched and there were many more entries; but the afternoon was a very mild day for late July, the sun was shining, the 4-H royalty was impressive, and the spectators were friendly and vocal. Aubrey and I rode in a classic 1975 Buick LeSabre convertible owned and chauffeured by a very warm and gracious Dick and Marita Millner of Abilene as Carl flitted around the parade entries on the 3-wheel recumbent tricycle built by RANS, Inc of Hays, known as the Trizzard (low-slung and long like a lizard, but with 3 wheels). After the parade, we enjoyed the buffet at the local Pizza Hut, managed by Lisa, who sees to her customers with incredible speed and agility.
Following dinner, (which may not have been the wisest choice for Grandpa) Aubrey was insistent upon checking out the carnival rides and Grandpa was her chosen escort for the rides that had a height requirement! He survived and the ride home was very quiet with both Aubrey and Grandpa dozing for the duration. (Aubrey has become quite a rodeo enthusiast, like her father, but the journey home was lengthy and we decided to forego the buckin’ broncs this time. Congratulations to all of the 4-H royalty who were to be introduced and the king and queen crowned. I’m sorry we missed it.)
Thanks to all of you who invest so much time and energy throughout the year so that communities across the state can have the experience and enjoyment that these events offer. What a wonderful way to encourage our youth and to model civic efficacy! We are well-blessed!
